NY Liberty Wins WNBA Championship; City organizes parade in their honor
An important score for the New York team.
Christmas came early this year for the NY Liberty women’s basketball team. The team won the WNBA championship, the first in franchise history. If you or your little one are fans of the women’s basketball team, you can join us for the festive parade this Thursday from 10 a.m.! When they go to school, don’t worry as the celebrations continue all week long!
It is the first time the team has won since its founding almost 30 years ago Gothamist. The ladies defeated the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 after a long season and some gritty overtime on the field. The team was the underdog of the finalists, as they were the only team entering the championships that had never won before. They had a tough track record, having previously lost five finals, but this year they achieved revenge.
Star player Breanna Stewart scored two free throws with five seconds left, tying the Lynx and opening the door to the championship for her team.
Social media got it wrong highlights of the intense game, with the official WNBA account tweet ‘#WelcomeToTheW’ as it celebrated this momentous occasion.

On Monday morning, City Hall announced that a ticker-tape parade for the championship will be held next Thursday, October 24. The parade will begin promptly at 10 a.m. in Manhattan’s Battery Park and then travel along a portion of Broadway to the Financial District, also known as the “Canyon of Heroes.” In one video message on Xformerly known as Twitter, Mayor Eric Adams announced the parade, beaming with joy for the women’s team.
“We are enthusiastic. Congratulations New York Liberty on winning your first WNBA title,” Adams begins, wearing a navy blue suit, baseball cap and bright orange water bottle. “You have made us proud and we are going to make you proud. We’re going to give you a ticker-tape parade, Thursday morning at 10am. And then we will have a great ceremony here at City Hall to thank our heroes.”
Adams also announced that City Hall and other municipal buildings, including Brooklyn Borough Hall, will be lit with sea foam Monday night to celebrate their victory.
“From the beginning of the season until the very last game, the New York Liberty were focused on a single goal: winning. Tonight they achieved a historic victory and made our great city proud by becoming champions, the first in the history of the franchise,” said Mayor Adams. Channel 7.
“At a time when the rest of the country is finally recognizing the endless talent in our WNBA, we are proud to have New York City take home the trophy. To our WNBA Champions: Thank you for being a role model for our city and for exemplifying the values of grit, determination and hard work. Now we can’t wait to celebrate off the field and give you the parade you deserve through the Canyon of Heroes!
Fans from the five boroughs celebrated on Sunday after the victory. At the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, thousands started singing ‘We Are The Champions’ after the iconic victory. Meanwhile, sports brand Nike surprised many when they released a video of Lady Liberty wearing a championship ring. And of course, the party wouldn’t have been complete without Ellie the Elephant making an appearance festive danceall of which were captured on NY Liberty’s official Tiktok channel.
Although they were underdogs, the season proved fruitful for the Liberty. Their performance made them the second most watched team in the WNBA, averaging over 12,000 views, up from their fifth-place finish in 2023.
The Liberty team was recently purchased by Joseph Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai, who purchased the team from New York Knicks owner James Dolan in 2019. The win marks a big step in history for women’s basketball players and further reiterates that young girls and women truly can do anything they put their minds to.
