There's a reason why loafers have stood the test of time. The classic shoes, which have become even more popular in recent years, are extremely versatile, making them a workhorse that is worth an investment. But styling loafers can be a little tricky, especially when it comes to socks. Don't worry, though, because expert help is here.
“The great thing about a loafer is that it can really be worn for any occasion,” says the international professional stylist Zadriaan Smitwho is one half of the celebrity styling duo Zadrian + Sara. “Don't limit yourself when styling loafers.”
Loafers have an inherently androgynous feel, Smith noted, so “people sometimes make the mistake of only pairing them with suits and pants.” But matching the right loafer with a dress or skirt “can add an unexpected twist to a more feminine outfit, resulting in an interesting and fashionable look,” Smith added.
Although many people associate loafers with formal or business attire, they can just as easily be dressed casually. “They look great paired with jeans and casual wear in general,” said Smith. “They come in so many different colors and designs – it's easy to find a style that can potentially match any outfit.”
Chunky loafersfor example, are currently particularly popular and add a relaxed atmosphere to an outfit. Likewise its easy and casual loafer muleswhich Smith noted reached peak popularity in 2015 thanks to Gucci's backless fur loafers. On the other hand, a preference for a fancier occasion can be a slimmer silhouette or a loafer with more heel.
But what about socks? Unlike a sandal where the entire foot is visible, or a boot that completely covers the socks, a loafer is somewhere in the middle, where a sock or ankle is always visible. In fact, showing a little (or a lot) of sock is often the key to properly styling a loafer. So what's the right way to put it all together?
Here are Smith's tips for pairing any kind of loafer with the right sock:
For loafers and cropped trousers
If you're pairing loafers with above-the-ankle pants, choose “a calf-length sock that goes under the hem of the pants so that no skin shows,” Smith said. 'This prevents awkward proportions and adds length to the trousers. ankle area.” This budget-friendly three-pack has black, brown and cream options for a variety of outfits.
