The mother of a patient nominated Schaffer for her exceptional patient- and family-centered care. The nominator was at work when she received a call that her son had been in an accident.
“When I arrived at his bedside, he was unrecognizable, and Michelle did something truly extraordinary: she made me part of his care team,” the nominator wrote. “She immediately informed me and then had me do small things to help her. As we waited for an ultrasound and CT scan, she held my hand and made me feel less alone.
“That one act brought hope where there was none. She did everything she could to make sure he got the best care possible, and for that I am truly grateful.”
