Picture books are a great way to teach children political concepts and conflicts. Here are some books to try:

  • To vote by Eileen Christelow: Your children will learn how democracy works through this fun picture book about voting.
  • Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio: Grace begins her journey to become the first-ever female president. This is a great book for young girls to get inspired and learn about the electoral system.
  • Just help! How to build a better world by Sonia Sotomayer: In a story inspired by her own family’s desire to help others, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor takes young readers on a journey through a neighborhood where everyone helps each other build a better world for themselves and their communities.

Watch TV shows and movies

Shows and movies are another compelling way to teach politics. Try this one:

  • PBS crash course: Online episodes in which children learn about democracy, economics and how our legal system works.
  • Well versed: Dr. Jill Biden’s Show That Teaches Kids All About Civics! Episodes are available on Nickelodeon platforms, Paramount+, Noggin and iCivics.
Visit Museums

Museums are a fun, interactive way for children to learn about history and understand more about our modern-day government. Here are some of our favorite NYC museums:

  • American Natural History Museum: Although this museum is not primarily focused on politics, it is packed with American history. View a range of exhibitions or take part in one of the children’s and family workshops.
  • National Immigration Museum: Teach your children about American immigration through a collection of photos, heirlooms and historical records.

Tips for talking to your children

Let them ask questions

It’s normal for kids to have a lot of questions about politics, and you might not have all the answers. That’s okay! However, keep the floor open for their questions so that they feel heard. Curiosity is something we all try to encourage as parents, even when the answers aren’t so clear.

Use real life examples

Examples help ground your children in things they already know, making it easier to explain political concepts. They even explained to them that American women were not allowed to vote until 1920. Think about scenarios they face every day and apply them to the problems that arise.

Take your children to the polls

We totally get it: the lines can be long. But if you can, there’s nothing more fun than seeing the political process unfold right in front of you. Taking your kids to vote is a great way to teach them how it all works. It’s more than just voting. It’s about showing them how important it is to be involved and make their voices heard.

Plus, it can spark great conversations about why voting is important. So while waiting in line may take some time, the memories and lessons you share with your kids will be worth it!
